Concentrating solar collector

Characterization of a concentrating solar collector

Solar radiation, an emission-free and inexhaustible supply of energy, is the most abundant of all known energy sources in the world. Utilizing solar technology and other forms of renewable energy helps to reduce reliance on fossil fuels for energy production, thus directly reducing CO2 emissions which contribute to artificial climate change and global warming. Egypt has enormous sun potentials and vast uninhabited deserts placing it as a major possible candidate for employing solar energy, thus a solar power plant is estimated to operate by the end summer of 2010; this plant should trigger solid research work and encourage public access to solar energy. There are different ways to harvest solar energy that are being discussed among which is the concentrating optics; a small model of a cylindrical trough solar collector is being developed and analyzed. Ways for further improvement are cited for future investigation.
