Yesterday, The Nobel Prize in Physics for 2009 was awarded to Charles K. Kao for his groundbreaking work on fiber optical communication and to Willard S. Boyle and George E. Smith for their work on charge-coupled devices (CCDs), the backbone of modern CCD camera chips.
